Two screw sizes and one plate shape account for nearly every “why does this not fit” moment in tripod gear. None of it is complicated once you know which is which.
The two thread sizes

The numbers mean diameter and threads per inch. A 1/4″-20 screw is a quarter inch across with 20 threads to the inch; a 3/8″-16 is three-eighths across with 16.
Making them fit: the reducer bushing
A 3/8″-16 to 1/4″-20 reducer bushing is a small threaded insert that drops into a 3/8″ hole and turns it into a 1/4″ hole. They cost very little, they are the single most useful thing in the bag nobody tells you to buy, and many tripod heads ship with one already fitted — which is why people often do not realise their head has a 3/8″ thread underneath.
The conversion only runs one way in practice. You can shrink a 3/8″ socket to 1/4″ with a bushing. Going the other direction needs a stud or adapter rather than a bushing.
Quick-release plates: Arca-Swiss and everything else
Arca-Swiss is the closest thing to a universal standard. The plate is a 38mm-wide dovetail with 45-degree angled sides that slides into a matching clamp. It is not a licensed standard, which means “Arca-Swiss compatible” plates from different makers usually interoperate but occasionally fit tightly. Most serious tripod heads, gimbals, and L-brackets use it.
Manfrotto uses its own rectangular plate systems that are not Arca compatible. If you own a Manfrotto head and want to move to Arca gear, the usual fix is an Arca clamp that mounts on the Manfrotto plate rather than replacing the head.
Standardising on Arca across your whole kit is worth doing once. Every body, every long lens collar, and every head speaks the same language, and you stop carrying adapters.
Load rating: read it sceptically
Published load ratings describe what a head will physically hold without slipping, usually with the load balanced and pointed straight up. They do not describe what it will hold steady with a long lens pointed sideways at an angle.
A workable rule for telephoto work is to pick a head rated for at least twice the weight of your heaviest camera-and-lens combination. A 2kg lens plus a 700g body is 2.7kg, so shop at 5-6kg and up. Under-specifying the head is the most common cause of slow creep — the lens gradually drooping out of frame during a long exposure.
Mount long lenses by the collar, never the body
Any lens with a tripod collar should be mounted by that collar. Mounting a heavy lens by the camera’s baseplate hangs the entire lens weight off the lens mount, which is a bearing that was never designed for it, and it puts the centre of mass far in front of the head where it torques badly.
For long telephotos, a dedicated Arca lens plate that replaces the factory foot is a worthwhile upgrade — longer, more rigid, and it lets you slide the whole rig fore and aft to balance it on a gimbal head.
