To get sharp photos with a telephoto lens, use a shutter speed of at least 1/(focal length), turn on image stabilization in the right mode, stop down one stop from wide open, and use a tripod with a remote shutter release for stationary subjects. Most telephoto sharpness problems come from camera shake, not lens quality.
To get silky smooth water in waterfall photos, use a shutter speed of 1/4s to 2 seconds, ISO 100, and aperture f/8-f/16 on a tripod. In daylight you will usually need a neutral density filter. The longer the shutter speed, the smoother and silkier the water appears.
For a sharp, detailed moon photo, use ISO 100, aperture f/8, and shutter speed 1/250s as a starting point. Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm, a tripod, manual focus set on the lunar surface, and shoot RAW to protect highlight detail.
For northern lights photography, use manual mode with a wide-angle lens at f/2.8 or wider, ISO 800-3200, and a shutter speed of 5-15 seconds. Focus manually on a star, use a tripod, and shoot RAW for the most flexibility in post.
To photograph birds in flight, use a shutter speed of at least 1/1600s, continuous autofocus (AI Servo on Canon, AFC on Nikon and Sony), and burst mode. Start with ISO 400-800, aperture f/5.6-f/8, and adjust based on your light.
To focus in the dark for night photography, use live view, zoom in to a bright star or distant light at 10x magnification, and turn your focus ring until the point of light is as small and sharp as possible. Then lock your focus ring with tape or switch to manual focus to avoid accidental refocusing.
For macro photography of flowers and insects, use a narrow aperture (f/8 to f/16) to maximize your shallow depth of field, keep ISO as low as possible (100 to 400), and set your shutter speed to at least 1/200s to avoid blur from subject movement or camera shake. Manual focus with focus peaking gives you the most control.
To photograph deer without startling them, approach slowly from downwind, wear neutral or earth-toned clothing, and stop moving the moment the deer looks up. Use a 200mm to 400mm telephoto lens so you can keep your distance. Set your shutter speed to at least 1/500s to freeze their movement.
For waterfall photography, a 6-stop ND filter (ND64) is the most versatile choice. It gives you enough light reduction to shoot at f/11 and ISO 100 while creating silky water blur at shutter speeds between 1/4 second and 2 seconds. A 10-stop ND is better for very bright midday conditions.
